Cain

Tina wants revenge on Cain and his family. As the police attempt to apprehend her in the middle of town, a gunfight breaks out and kills a passer-by. The investigation is launched, to determine whether the victim was killed by a policeman, under the responsibility of Lucie, the new SRPJ commander, or by the determined fugitive. Cain questions the closest witness, Antoine Dupré.

A woman is attacked and falls into a coma. She had come out of the closet six months earlier, but was hiding her love affair from her two children. Cain discovers that his eldest son runs an association for young asylum seekers. At the same time, he learns that his mother, Alice, works for an organization that decides on the fate of the same asylum seekers.

Renaud Maurin, a talented nurseryman, was killed in a homemade explosion in his greenhouse. His wife, Mathilde, is shocked, as is his business partner, Adrien. But soon, Cain finds him alive, hidden in a garden in the middle of development. Whose body was it, if not his? Why won't Renaud reveal that he's alive? Cain tries to take advantage of the situation.

Pascal Andrix, alias Diablo, president of a motorcycle club, is found dead, shot in the head at point-blank range. Was it a settling of scores? Trafficking gone wrong? Cain senses that another, more personal story has been solved here. He is supported in his investigation by Captain Cortez of the local gendarmerie. This model husband had known Diablo well since he was a teenager.

Cain investigates a murder in La Ciotat. The victim is the boss of the town's shipyards, which are undergoing radical change. The reconversion of the site to the repair of luxury yachts has upset the balance. A large number of steelworkers are now unemployed, and families are being torn apart. Others are holding on to their secrets, while crews of foreign boats are landing on the docks.

Cain soon realizes that this is a breeding ground for resentment and the settling of scores in La Ciotat. In a world where everyone is trying to save their own skin, some people manage to adapt, while others kill and are driven to violence. A corpse has been found near the water. Gino, recently released from prison, has been stabbed.

With a broken arm, Cain is unable to get around on his own. So he agrees to spend his convalescence at his old friend Arthur's luxurious hotel. But instead of a well-deserved rest, what he finds there is more like a real headache: Cain is convinced he has witnessed the murder of Arthur's sister Amandine by her husband, José.

Stunia's niece Emilie is attacked by her boyfriend. Stunia arrives just in time to save her. But her intervention goes wrong, and Stunia now blames herself for what has become a murder. Drug-addicted and violent, Amalrik, the assailant, was a notorious drug dealer. But extenuating circumstances won't stop Stunia from ending up in prison.

Leonard Mills, 58, an obstetrician-gynecologist employed at an assisted reproduction center, was found dead, frozen, in the room used to store waiting eggs and sperm. The upper body of the victim, renowned for his professionalism, had been sprayed with liquid nitrogen, causing cardiac arrest. For some, the doctor was almost the equivalent of a god, the one who had enabled them to have children.

Judge Mirabeau has made his own father's murder look like suicide. Cain is looking for evidence to convict him, but he triggers an unprecedented response from the judge. The latter entrusts an investigation into him to Major Leroux, one of his former enemies. Leroux sets out to condemn Cain for all his past procedural errors, and to confront him with the murderers he has arrested.
