Call the Midwife

As Christmas approaches, a bout of influenza sweeps through both Nonnatus House and the Turner family. When Mother Mildred declares that God is calling her to set up a branch house in the Outer Hebrides, it seems an ideal opportunity for the nuns and midwives to convalesce in the bracing Scottish air.

Dr. Turner, Shelagh, Mother Mildred, Trixie, Sister Julienne, Valerie and Lucille set off on their journey to the Outer Hebrides, where they are to stay in a freezing cold converted church. As the team set about establishing an antenatal clinic and treating the local population, they must battle not only the weather and bleak terrain, but the suspicions of some of the islanders.

Dr.Turner and Nurse Crane must deal with an alarming outbreak of diphtheria. Fred finds an abandoned baby in a dustbin, and the team must help locate its mother.

Leading up to Mother's Day, the team must survive Lent and are forced to give up more than just cigarettes and sugar. Meanwhile, Dr. Turner puzzles over a mysterious string of symptoms.

Lucille is trapped in a lift with a woman in labor while working at St. Cuthbert's, and Nurse Crane helps a Sylheti woman with fistula.

Four new doctors arrive at Nonnatus House and ruffle some feathers. Fred and Reggie try to help an old man and his pigeons, while Dr. Turner tries to solve the old man's cough.

Sister Frances struggles to persuade the wife of a cancer patient to accept help, and as the nation obsesses over The Sound of Music, Sister Julienne considers the privileges of being a nun.

Maya's adoption by the Turners comes under threat when someone from her past appears. Valeriea's cousin's baby has a devastating illness, and Kevin returns to work with Dr. Turner.

Trixie helps a blind mother, Marion, care for her new baby, but trouble starts when Marion's sister calls Social Services to intervene.

The team must rally to prepare for Sister Monica Joan's birthday. The closing of a maternity home brings an influx of expectant mothers.
