The Vise - Mark Saber

Tony Latham, a distressed young man, bursts into Saber's office and demands he find the man who murdered his fiancée, Nancy. Latham believes that Turek, the janitor at Nancy's building, is guilty but the police are not convinced. Starring Basil Dignam, Michael Brill, Eric Pohlmann.

Respectable insurance Agent William Heatherton falls for an attractive girl and funds the dalliance by stealing from his clients. When he realises she is not all she seems, however, his thoughts turn to murder.

John Wilton, a young Australian, walks into Saber's office and asks him to find out who he is. Wilton's father, in his dying moments, told the young man that if he could get to Britain then he'd be rich. Wilton seeks Saber's help. Oscar Brand, now a respectable financier but during the war a black-marketeer, is determined to track down and destroy Werner Sharpe - the only man who knows his past. He hires Saber to track Sharpe down.

Young Peggy Carstairs, the daughter of Saber's old army friend, confides in him that her stepmother is a spy. Saber dismisses Peggy's concerns as childish fantasies, but his curiosity is piqued when secret documents go missing.

Saber visits bank manager Mr Withers to discuss a delicate matter. Withers worries that one of their tellers, Ray Gerard, has been seen living outside his means. Saber investigates - and is shocked at what he finds.

Murdering his girlfriend's husband, Tony Preem covers his tracks by disposing of John Rodock's body in a crusader knight's tomb at the local church.
