In the season premiere, sparked by Grace Greenleaf's return to Memphis, tensions quickly rise.

Grace moves back to Memphis under false pretenses in order to pursue the man she holds responsible for her sister's death but finds the realities of working in her family's church again harder to handle than she expected.

Grace finds herself on an uncomfortable date. Jacob and Kerissa see their marriage for what it has become. Meanwhile, Senator Banks turns up the heat in his inquiry into the church's finances.

The mayor calls in a favor-- leaving the Bishop in a bind that could potentially split the church. Grace is blackmailed about Faith's past. Jacob & Kerissa. Charity can't keep a secret.

When members of the church reach out for prayers for their terminally ill child, Grace (Merle Dandridge, "The Night Shift") and the Bishop (Keith David, "Community") find themselves with opposing views on the value of hope and the responsibilities of a pastor.

The Bishop, despite protestations from Grace and Lady Mae, forces Grace to deal with her feelings about returning to the pulpit. Lady Mae admits her blame for Faith's death. Kevin's advice backfires, bringing up deep-seated issues.

Mac juggles many tasks for the Greenleaf clan as Chief Council and family member. Between Grace, church complications, and the appearance of his and Lady Mae's father, Mac is set on a collision course that threatens his status as a free man.

Amidst public outcry, Grace reaches out to Officer Nelson. Noah evades Lady Mae's questions. Lady Mae encourages the Bishop to reveal a secret. Bassie Skanks might have deeper reasons for wanting to destroy Calvary.

A debate erupts about security at Calvary. Charity confronts Kevin. Mac plans to leave the country setting off a chain of events with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Mac's attempt to blackmail the Bishop is thwarted by Grace. Grace has to deal with Sophia's father, Ray, who has doubts about Grace's parenting. Charity, fed up with being disrespected, finally speaks up.

The church, beset on all sides by scandal, is hemorrhaging money and members. Ray takes Grace to court for custody of Sophia. Jacob's offers to help at Calvary are declined. Kevin gets closer to Adrian.

Grace, Ray and Sophia go to court for a custody hearing. Basie, the Bishop and Jacob meet to discuss an opportunity at Triumph. Deacon Sykes suggests to hold a “women's day” at a smaller venue and asks Lady Mae about letting Grace preach.

Deacon Sykes is not sold on the idea of Lady Mae preaching at “women's day.” Basie reveals he wants Jacob to run Triumph's new community center that will be built very near Calvary. Lady Mae confronts her sister Mavis.
