Daniel Deronda

When the young, idealistic Daniel Deronda first sees the beautiful and wilful Gwendolen Harleth at the gambling tables in the German spa town of Leubronn, it is a moment of destiny which will affect their lives forever.

Daniel, out rowing on the Thames, saves Mirah Lapidoth, a young Jewish girl, from drowning. His search for Mirah's family opens up strange new possibilities, making him question his own motives.

Gwendolen, whose marriage has become increasingly unbearable, tells Daniel at the family Christmas gathering of her unhappiness. She later attends Mirah's first public recital and she can barely hide her jealousy.

Daniel's quest to discover his true identity takes him to Genoa where his mother gives him some surprising news. When fate brings Gwendolen back into his life she makes him promise never to forsake her, but Daniel must confront his true feelings for Mirah.
