Hans Christian Andersen: My Life as a Fairytale

Prophesizing, a gypsy says to a fifteen-year-old Hans Christian Andersen: "There will come a day when all of Copenhagen will be lit up in your honor." The only child from a poor family in the Danish village of Odense, Hans lives in a fantasy world. His hand-carved dolls and puppets, his father's bedtime stories and his own natural flair for fantastic tales bring the child temporary escape.

The young Hans Christian Andersen charms the distinguished Jonas Collin and his daughter Jette. As wealthy as they are kind, they make their lavish home his. They're also fond of Hans' talent for turning all that he sees into entertaining and wondrous tales. When Collin introduces him to a publisher, Hans sees an opportunity to reach a wider audience with his imaginative stories.
