Laurie Downes, an ex-cop driven to obsession over the death of his lover, sets out to find the murderers himself. He becomes a person of interest to police when he is identified as the driver of a car that runs two young girls off the road in a frenzied chase.

When Lisa Hardman, a prominent psychiatrist dies suddenly of a heart attack, her good friend Jane Halifax finds herself acting as de facto mother to Lisa's bereft kids and a verbal punching bag for her confused and angry husband Tim.

A prominent QC is found murdered in his house in a highly questionable manner that suggests sadomasochism be involved. The man's supposed lover Simon Laser, a well-known columnist was the one who found the QC and police soon hear about threatening letters.
