Having fled an uninhabitable Earth, androids Mother and Father settle on the planet Kepler-22b to start a family with human embryos. Twelve years later, only one child, Campion, remains.

After her confrontation with the Mithraic, Mother brings five of their children back to the settlement, where Campion does his best to make them feel at home. Meanwhile, Marcus struggles to survive alone on Kepler-22b.

Convinced that Mother is poisoning his new friends, Campion plans an escape, while Marcus and Sue attempt to mobilize a rescue party of their own.

Father tries to teach the children how to hunt some of Kepler-22b’s mysterious creatures for food. Meanwhile, a stunning discovery ignites a conflict between Marcus and the Mithraic leader, Ambrose.
