Time Team HD

The Time Team is back for their 19th series of archaeology digs. Archaeology isn't just about digging up the mysterious remains of the long dead. It can reveal how we used to live in amazing detail. In this season, the team checks out some ancient horse-racing, uncovers one of the wealthiest medieval cities in England, and elsewhere, yet another gigantic Roman structure.

Tony Robinson and the Time Team visit the tiny Gateholm Island off the coast of Wales. The only way to get to it is by rigging a 500-meter zip line way above the wave-lashed rocks. What treasure could lie here, and what will they tell us about this small island's use throughout history?

The Village of Bitterley provides an interesting enigma for the Time Team. The village's school and cottages cluster prettily around the green, but the village church and the manor house lie more than half a mile away, on the other side of a lumpy, bumpy, empty field. How did the people travel from one place to another with ease, and why were these structures built so far apart?

Tony and the Time Team are in Swansea, a present-day city with a rich and vibrant history. It was one of the wealthiest in England, but not from the mining of coal as many others were. Tony and the team tear up the pristine lawns of a stately home in search of the secrets of its illustrious former owners: the de Veres, who built a small monastery here in the 12th century. There is also a rumor that the dissolute 17th Earl de Vere, Edward, wrote at least some of William Shakespeare's plays, and could be buried here along with his ancestors and descendants.

800 years ago, the people of Kenfig, on the south coast of Wales, thought they had built the perfect town. It was erected around a harbor with easy access to the sea and sheltered from most elements and enemies. The town appears to have been a thriving commercial success, but then it vanished, leaving just a few castle walls to mark its existence. What happened to this utopia?

For generations, a family of Somerset farmers has been wondering if there was ever a castle on top of the hill they call "Castle Hill". A medieval charter refers to a Norman castle in the area, but there are several likely locations. Geophysics' radar shows a large rectangular structure in the ground, possibly a keep, along with some pieces of found pottery. It's time for the team to dig!
