In 1953, in the quiet village of Grantchester, local vicar Sidney Chambers has spent a glorious morning with his friend Amanda, with whom he is secretly in love. But now he is running late for the funeral of a solicitor who died of an apparent suicide. When the man’s mistress suggest that it was in fact murder, Sidney begins looking into it and draws the attention of grumpy DI Geordie Keating.

When Sidney’s sister, Jen, pressures him into attending Amanda’s engagement dinner, he readies himself for a night of tension and misery. But the evening goes even worse than expected after Amanda’s engagement ring goes missing—and then, the next morning, one of the guests is found murdered.

After Guy and Amanda ask Sidney to perform their wedding ceremony, the heartbroken vicar takes solace in a bottle. When Mrs. Maguire points out he is neglecting his parish, Sidney vows to focus on his clerical duties, including helping parishioner Isabel with her upcoming wedding. But Isabel’s mother is dead set against the nuptials, and events soon give credence to her fears.

Awoken in the early hours by a fire in the village, Sidney runs into the burning house to pull a dazed and reluctant Marion Taylor from her home. Afterwards, with questions swirling about the origins of the fire, Sidney is surprised to find Geordie acting strangely. As the detective deals with a personal crisis, will it fracture their partnership?

Sidney and Geordie head into London to blow off steam at Johnny Johnson’s jazz club, but when their revelry is interrupted by a scream from backstage, they learn that if you’re a policeman or a vicar, you’re never truly off duty.

As Amanda and Guy’s wedding looms, Sidney goes into a tailspin and wonders if he’s truly cut out for life as the vicar of Grantchester. The murder of a local policeman doesn’t help matters, as Sidney allows himself to be sucked back into another investigation rather than putting his house in order. Then tragedy strikes and forces Sidney to confront his demons, both past and present.
