Anna Watson's (Michelle Williams) brother returns from World War II mentally damaged and is then committed to a mental institution. After his sudden death, Anna begins to question her own sanity. The actions of her gangster boyfriend Billy (Meat Loaf) push her further until she's convinced the only way she can be "cured" is to have a lobotomy.
