Eighteen months after August’s death, the Krogh family tries to find its way back to everyday life, with each family member using entirely different strategies.

Elisabeth pays a visit to a clairvoyant in the hopes of establishing contact with August. At the same time, she tries to get Johannes to talk about August.

The sale of Brovang Church causes a stir in Lindegård. God has never seemed further away to Johannes, which worries Svend, who has also noticed that Johannes’s passion has waned.

It’s the start of a new year, which means change for the entire Krogh family. The loss of August has created distance between Johannes and Elisabeth, and if their marriage is to survive, some truths must be shared.

Christian struggles to write his master's thesis and complete his theology studies and is forced to face the fact that he needs help. So he looks for inspiration in August's old diary.

Christian finds documents from August’s time as an army chaplain, which sends him on a journey back to the time after August’s death. In August’s papers, he finds something he wishes they had all known back then.

Christian travels to Jerusalem to find where August wanted his ashes buried. During a conversation with the bishop, Johannes realises that Anton’s baptism has enormous consequences.
