We rarely consider many of the objects which make up the modern world - elevators, stockings, underground railways, football boots, ballistic missiles, carpets, helicopters, breast implants, street lights, submarines, bricks, machine guns, supermarket trolleys. But apparently simple things are often the products of the most extraordinary, highly scientific engineering processes.
