Lecture 21. The Church and the Crusades. Having seen how successfully Islam was spread by the sword, the Christians decided to "baptize" the Islamic idea of jihad. The result was the Crusades, the Christian Holy Wars that aimed at regaining the site most sacred to Christianity - the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. But gradually the Crusading ideal was debased into mercantilistic warfare.
