The original seven-year-olds are now forty-two. Careers are stuck or flourishing, marriages are strong, shaky, or over.

This programme examines how the group has progressed in the last seven years and finds there are some unexpected changes - including one of the original characters who's back after a long absence.

Director Michael Apted is back to revisit his original subjects from 1964 and sees how their lives are progressing now that they are 56 years old.

At the age of 56, how are they facing up to getting older? How many of the original children are still taking part?

The group are once more brought together and, assess whether their lives have been ruled by circumstance or self-determination.

We return to visit the people whose lives have been followed since they were seven while featuring more of the original line-up than ever before.
