The Etruscans developed a culture and trade network that rivaled that of Carthage and the Greeks. But Rome would extinguish that unique civilization; Rome's rule over Tuscany was one of benevolent neglect. Tuscany survived the Germanic invasions, but was devastated by the Byzantine-Ostrogothic wars of the 6th century. Finally the Germanic Lombards would start Tuscany on its road to recovery.
