Based on E.L. Doctorow's novel, this nontraditional Western follows a broken-down sheriff, Will Blue, who tries to defend his town from a mysterious outlaw. In the small settlement of Hard Times, a stranger rides in, killing several people, raping a woman, and burning down the town. Blue vows to rebuild, but when a newcomer helps revitalize Hard Times, the criminal returns.
