Islands: Nature's Wild Laboratories

Vancouver Island is the largest island on the west coast of North America. Every inch of this island from its mountains to its forests is deeply connected to the sea, and every animal has to find a way to fit into that unique alliance to survive.

Off the eastern coast of Australia lies K’gari, also known as Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world where every meal is hard won. At its heart on top of the dunes stands its own miraculous tropical rainforest.

Baffin Island is a place of ultimate extremes. For half of the year, it’s locked in ice and nearly unfit for life, but when winter releases its grip, its coastline shrinks and millions of visitors thrive while ice-loving locals struggle to survive.

Borneo is the third largest island in the world and every corner of the island puts its wild inhabitants to the test. Here, evolution is in overdrive, resulting in an explosion of life, but the diversity of this island is threatened by humans.

The Okavango Delta in southern Africa is like an inland ocean with a thousand islands, where the desert sun battles floodwater for control. As the seasons change worlds are created and taken away, and every animal must cope with never-ending change.

Off the southern coast of India lies the island of Sri Lanka - an abundant oasis in a tropical ocean. Over two thousand years, humans have changed the face of the island, creating both opportunities and obstacles for its wildlife.
