The French Alps, 1944. En route to join Kit in Le Crest, Emily narrowly escapes capture by the Germans with help from Nicole, a young Frenchwoman. Now heading the London office, Faith sends two new recruits to Le Crest, Virginia and Lewis.

Faith is appalled to learn that the planned revolt is simply a diversion that will certainly result in partisan deaths. In Le Crest, however, the blissfully unaware Maquis plan their uprising.

Faith threatens to resign when she learns that the fighters in Le Crest won't get the support they need. Emily makes a deadly mistake, and Virginia slips away to meet with Philippe.

Twenty villagers from Courmont are killed in reprisal for Rex, who renounces God and quits the church. Emily tells Kit and Renard that the uprising must be aborted.

Having forced Sylvie to tell him of the setup at Le Crest, Stuckler shoots her and her mother.

Interrogated by Renard, Philippe says nothing but Virginia divulges their relationship. Already angry to think that no Allied support will be forthcoming to combat the expected German air strike, Renard orders them both to be shot along with Nicole.

Emily and Luc make it back to Le Crest, where Liz has just arrived. Lewis and Kit are caught by the Germans.

German paratroopers swarm all over Le Crest, forcing the Maquis into hiding in the woods.
