Visions of War: U.S. Marines

Fury in the Pacific is a documentary about a pair of World War II battles in the Pacific: the Battle of Peleliu and the Battle of Angaur. It was co-produced by the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Marines, and directed by a series of combat cameraman. The film is noteworthy for its praise of the fighting abilities of Japanese soldiers, and its fast-paced editing.

On the activities of the 1st and 6th Marine Divisions on the island. A "Corsair" plane lays a smoke screen to protect tanks crossing a field north of Naha under Japanese artillery fire. Marines follow tanks across open terrain, and mop up Japanese hillside positions after the tanks' flamethrowers have been used. Bazookas are used against Japanese strong points to open a road west of Shuri.

This program presents the history of marine amphibious operations from the earliest days of the republic in 1776 at New Providence Island when the continental marines were led in an early amphibious operation against the British, to the marine corps amphibious operations during the Korean War in the 1950's.

Marines prepare to and invade one of the Marshall Island using tremendous firepower before landing troops. Very vivid battle footage, including dead, wounded, and surrendering enemy soldiers, as well as dead and wounded Americans. Ends with Gen. Eisenhower war bond appeal.

Marines clean machine guns and attend religious services aboard transports at sea, climb into landing craft which head for shore, wade through the surf protected by naval, and aerial bombardment, consolidate beach positions, move inland, and care for wounded. Mortars are fired and Japanese infantry flushed from dugouts. Japanese POW's are searched and given first aid.

An amphibious assault on Saipan. Marines fight on the island. Wounded soldiers receive treatment and women and children are removed to safety. The Battle of Tarawa-fierce battle footage as the Marines land on Tarawa and take the island. The fighting lasted three days and the Marines lost 1026 men. 5th Div. Marines advance on Iwo Jima behind artillery, naval, and aerial bombardment.

Marines inch forward on Tarawa. Wounded are carried to the coast and loaded on landing craft. Army units relieve the Marines. Saipan Island: An American task force moves in on this strategic Japanese island base within near bomber range of Tokyo's front yard. After four days of naval and air bombardment the Marines take over, suffering losses three times those at Tarawa.

The Battle of Tinian was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on the island of Tinian in the Mariana Islands from 24 July until 1 August 1944. The 9,000-man Japanese garrison was eliminated, and the island joined Saipan and Guam as a base for the Twentieth Air Force.
