Ena - Queen Victoria Eugenia

London, 1905. Alfonso XIII arrives to arrange his marriage to one British but is captivated by another. Despite the disapproval of Alfonso's mother, the two wed. A radicalized anarchist returns to Spain after a trip around Europe.

Without her husband's love and without Bee, Ena's loneliness is absolute. Meanwhile, the First World War breaks out and Ena fears for the life of Maurice, her younger brother, who has been called up for military service.

A letter arrives at the palace. From a French woman, it begs Alfonso to help her find her husband. Inspired, the king forms the Office for Prisoners of War. Ena helps plan the modernization of the Red Cross--with unlikely support.

The death of thousands of soldiers causes a scandal, paving the way for dictatorship. Alfonso's relationship with a famous actress enrages Ena even as it confounds her: how can a woman so intolerant of dictatorship make her husband happy?

1929. Maria Cristina dies, the Wall Street crash leads to economic ruin, and movements against the dictatorship and the monarchy multiply. The royal family flees to Paris in exile and Ena, fed up, decides to separate from Alfonso.

Ena arranges a meeting with a Spanish journalist long thought to be an English spy. As she reflects on her past, it soon becomes clear she'd like the journalist to use his contacts to help gauge the future of the Spanish monarchy.
