The Lord commands Lehi to have his sons go back to Jerusalem to get the brass plates. After several attempts they get the plates from Laban and bring his servant Zoram with them.

Nephi and his brothers go back to Jerusalem again and get Ishmael and his family. Along the way Laman, Lemuel and some of the sons of Ishmael murmur and bind Nephi. Through Nephi's faith the bindings are loosened, and Laman, Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael repent.

Lehi sees the vision of the Tree of Life. Nephi prays to see it too. Laman and Lemuel don't understand the dream and Nephi tells them to pray to understand it.

The Lord commands Nephi to build a ship. Laman and Lemuel complain and tease him. Through the power of the Lord, they are shocked and see they should help Nephi finish the ship.
