Alex in the Jungle

The lion is one of the most ferocious animals in the jungle. The male lion has a mane on the back of its head and a tail with a tassel at the tip. The female doesn't have a mane at all but has a tail she uses to guide the babies. The lioness hunts for food and takes care of the family while the father protects the family with his strength and scary roar.

The gorilla is a large primate that feeds off forest herbs and plants. They are very intelligent and live in groups under the command of a male leader. Gorillas move on all fours with their knuckles on the ground, but their weight is supported by their feet. Usually they use tools like rocks or sticks to develop some tasks such as smashing food.

The chimpanzee is an animal which is quite similar to humans. They have a short body with long arms. They mainly feed on fruit, plants and berries. They live up in the trees in groups and are very friendly to each other. They kiss each other and shake hands. The baby chimpanzees stay near their mother until they reach 4 years old.

The orang-utan's name means 'people of the forest'. They are of a reddish brown colour and have long arms and it looks like they have four hands. They eat leaves and fruit. They make their houses at the top of the trees and spend most of their time there. The babies stay close to their mothers until they reach six years old.

"The buffalo is a kind of wild bull that lives in the jungle. They usually live in groups, standing near the water during the day, and are more active during the night. They have dark brown fur and both males and females have horns. They usually move very slowly, but can also reach great speeds when running.

"The tiger is a close relative of the lion but it has no mane and its fur has a striped pattern. It is also the largest member of the cat family. They are very good hunters and can live from the tropical rainforests to the temperate oak forest. They can live for as long as 15 years in the wild.

The hippopotamus' name means 'river horse'. They lay inside the water throughout the day, and come out for food at night. When submerged in the water, they always have to come up to the surface in order to breathe. They can be really heavy and huge. The amazing thing about hippos is that their skin produces its own sunscreen. It is a red and orange cream that also colours their skin.

"The Leopard is a wild elegant cat from the panther family. Normally they are of a light tan colour with black spots but sometimes, they can be born black. They are predators from the jungle and usually hunt for food during the night and rest in the shade of trees during the day. Also, they are excellent climbers because of their long, strong body.

The Koala is a mammal that lives in forest areas where eucalyptus trees grow. Koalas sleep a lot during the day and usually eat during the night. Koala babies never separate from their mummies. They ride on their back all the time. Their fur is very pleasant to touch.

The giraffe is the tallest living animal on Earth. They have a really long neck to reach the tall trees and feed, and also a long blue tongue. They are so big that they can eat a lot! They have a coat of a coloured, spotted pattern and small horns on the top of their head. They don't sleep much.
