Ex-police scientist-turned-author Joe Donovan is called to the scene of a murder, where his name has been written on the wall in blood beside the murder victim. A copycat killing from a real case he documented in one of his books, the immediate suspect is the man accused and acquitted of the original murder. Joe joins the investigation, but is horrified when his DNA is found on the murder weapon.

Joe discovers Kate is having an affair with her colleague Philip White and wakes up to find himself in White's flat, where he finds White dead and Joe's name painted on the wall in blood. He panics and leaves the flat, but soon returns to remove all traces of himself. At home, he burns his clothes and shoes and is confronted by his son Seth, who saw him leave the flat.

Joe sees a doctor about his lapses of memory. He discovers he is suffering from a condition known as fugue state. The police think Joe has a motive for the killing. Joe starts counter-investigations and enlists Cara to help him. The plot twists and turns as the viewer realises nothing is at it seems.
