Abducted and mutilated as a child, Gwynplaine is raised by a traveling showman. The diabolical smile on his face provokes fascination. He becomes soon a popular attraction. When he discovers that he is the heir to titles and riches, he resolves to use his position to help the poor. But he is confronted by the cynicism of the rich people. Nobody listens to him. They just keep on laughing at him.
