24 Hours In A&E

It's a busy Mothering Sunday at King's.23-year-old builder Jamie is rushed to King's by paramedics having fallen from the roof of a three-storey building, landing on a brick wall.

Four-year-old Alfie is rushed to King's with a broken thigh bone after falling off his bike into a sandpit. The medical team are concerned that Alfie may have ruptured an artery, causing internal bleeding.

86-year-old Ellen has been brought in by ambulance after her daughters, Carole and Janet, found her collapsed on the floor at home.As she was on the floor for a long time, Ellen's body temperature has dropped dangerously low to just 27 degrees. She's also lost five pints of blood.

74-year-old Brian is brought into King's by ambulance after falling backwards down a flight of stairs and being knocked unconscious. Brian has severe dementia and lives in sheltered accommodation, but he was staying at his partner Margaret's house at the time of the accident.

King's is a specialist stroke centre treating over 1,300 stroke patients each year and this episode features the work of the stroke team over a 24-hour period in the Emergency Department.

15-year-old Linden is brought to A&E having badly cut his leg while back flipping off a shed roof onto a trampoline. As well as calling an ambulance, Linden's friends filmed the accident on their mobile phones and happily show the clip to A&E staff. But Linden's mum Liz is less impressed and worries whether her son will ever learn to be more careful.

16-year-old Max is brought toKing's by air ambulance from after falling 14 feet onto his face at a skate park. He suffered a serious head injury and was motionless for about thirty seconds after the accident. As Max's parents, Steve and Tracey, are rushed to hospital in a police car, doctors need to ensure that Max is stable before they take him to CT.

Leanne is the sister in charge of Resus at King's College Hospital in south London today. 78-year-old Kevin is rushed to A&E by ambulance after suffering a cardiac arrest while exercising at the gym. Luckily for Kevin, gym instructor Jeff was nearby and was trained to use the gym's portable defibrillator to save his life.

Registrar Ling has just started her shift. Working alongside Ling is colleague and friend Claire, who's also a registrar.23-year-old David is brought to King's after having seizures uncontrollably for thirty minutes. He was found on the floor at home by his housemate Mike, who's accompanied him to hospital. This isDavid's second trip to A&E in a fortnight due to his epilepsy.

Sister Jen is on duty in Resus. She's looking after 48-year-old Bobby who's been brought to King's by his partner, Jackie,after havingseizures at home. Bobby has spent most of his adult life in prison, with a number of convictions for violent crimes.

Consultants Graham and Firasare running A&Etoday and tensions run high as police suspect a patienthas come to King's with a concealedweapon. "I guess it's part of King's -you expect the unexpected," says consultant Firas.

56-year-old Malcolm has been rushedto King's from his home in Kent after suffering a cardiac arrestand is on life support.He was actually incredibly lucky: his wife Heatherfound him when his heart stopped and she managed to resuscitatehim after two minutes before the paramedicsarrived.

89-year-old Alyce is brought to King's by ambulance after falling near her home. She's accompanied byher neighbourand close friend Linda. 23-year-old Sean is rushed to King's after a seizure that has lasted most of the night. He's brought to King's three to four times a year forseizuresthat stemfrom his epilepsy.

Consultant Des is running Resus today. Amonghis patients is 50-year-old mechanical engineer Graham, who's rushed to King's by ambulance after a suspected heart attack after complaining of chest pains.
