Pesmes, a former medieval stronghold in Franche-Comté, endured many invasions and changing rulers, from the Franks to the Holy Roman Empire, Burgundy and France. It became French in 1678. In the late 17th century, forges were built, becoming central to local life and economy for centuries. Closed in 1993, they are now being revived by villagers, who seek to preserve this industrial heritage.
