In this first episode Jeremy Brown starts his new job at an adult education college as a teacher of English to foreign students.

An Inspector is expected at the college and Jeremy is convinced that it is one of his new students in disguise.

Ranjeet is upset and tells the class that he will have to kill himself because he does not want to be part of an arranged marriage that is being set up for him.

Jeremy and his class manage to get themselves locked in the college overnight.

Miss Courtney arranges to find a more suitable female teacher to replace Jeremy but soon realises her mistake.

Trouble arises when one of Jeremy's students is arrested for shoplifting.

Exams are looming and Jeremy is determined to make sure that his pupils pass with flying colours.

Ali announces the news that he and Chung are engaged and plan to be married.

When Jeremy becomes ill with the flu his students decide to try and help him and offer advice of remedies and cures.

Jeremy decides that he will help one of his Russian students who plans to defect.

Jeremy finds himself in the boxing ring when one of his pupils tells another teacher that she and Jeremy are engaged to be married.

Jeremy decides that the caretaker of the college is his long lost father.

Whilst in the pub Jeremy manages to anger the college exam supervisor which is not good news for the pupils who are about to sit their exams.
