Forced to face her fear of swimming, Stephanie makes the rest of the family confront their fears leading to an uncomfortable situation on top of an amusement park rollercoaster.

Aaron discovers Maggie has a secret career as a romance novelist, which she denies, while doing a report on a grandparent. The family hatches a plan to get Maggie to reveal her secret identity.

Gabby and James' fighting gets so out of hand that Stephanie and Charlie stop punishing them altogether, hoping they will eventually work things out by themselves, but their plan does not go as smoothly as they hope.

Gabby loans Stephanie's expensive new purse to a popular girl, trying to fit in. When it comes back ruined, she has to replace it before Stephanie goes to show it off to the new society group she is also trying to impress.

Stephanie and Charlie learn that a past punishment of James' was unwarranted and award James a "get out of jail free" card. Realizing the gold they have, the kids barter the card among themselves.

When the Phillips' cousin Jamal, an older doppelganger of James, comes to town, Charlie fears he will be a bad influence on his younger cousin. Aaron and Maggie teach Gabby how to be fancy for an upcoming date.

To impress a client, Stephanie asks Aaron to befriend her son, unaware that the kid terrifies Aaron . When Gabby, not Charlie, saves Maggie's life after she starts choking, Charlie is desperate to get back in her good graces.

When Gabby and Noah start having issues, Gabby uses a childhood friend to make Noah jealous. Stephanie goes out of her way to correct Aaron when he accidentally calls her "Mom".

Charlie finally approves of a boy Gabby wants to date, which makes her question her decisions. Meanwhile, James somehow finds himself with two girlfriends at the same time, not knowing which to choose.

Stephanie discovers Gabby's a tyrant of a group leader for her school project. Stephanie learns that Gabby might not have been so wrong, however, when the group proves useless, leaving Stephanie to do all the work herself.
