Amir, Tomas, Dayan, Soerono and Marius are five cadets who join military training in a town in Central Java, during the struggle against the Dutch in 1947. On one occasion, their camp is attacked by the Dutch, and every cadet is killed except for Amir, Tomas, Dayan and Marius. Those who survive join the guerrilla forces in rural Java.
