Two scientists find a new way to harvest the power of "dark energy" using a tool called the "Proteus Accelerator." In theory, it will drill a hole in the universe, tap a pool of the mysterious matter and serve to power our world forever. But when an experiment destroys a city, only a select few can convince the Proteus team that their efforts are actually threatening the planet.
