Walking through the Glaciers

In the inaugural episode, join Alice Pedrazzini and mountain guide Romano Salis as they ascend the northern face of the Badile, a iconic peak in Bregaglia. This episode introduces the eight participants, the guides, and outlines the upcoming route.

Experience life and the joy of well-being in the picturesque landscapes of Bregaglia during the initial stage. Journeying from Casaccia to Soglio, the route ascends through the breathtaking Val Maroz and Val di Cam, exploring alpine vistas immortalized by artists like Segantini and Giacometti. The pinnacle of this stage is the summit of Piz Cam, standing at 2634 meters.

Five years ago, accessing the Sasc Furä da Soglio Hut required a journey through the Bondasca Valley. However, following the impactful landslide of Pizzo Cengalo in 2017, a new, steeper, and longer route became necessary. Accompanied by a charismatic guide, we embark on this unexpected journey, exploring the challenging paths around Badile and Cengalo, which have become his unconventional garden.

In this stage we will cross into neighboring Italy. To reach the Gianetti hut, we will discover the Val Codera and the Val Porcellizzo. A relatively short stage but with two challenging passes: the Trubinasca and the Porcellizzo which culminates at 2940 meters... the highest point of the route.

In this episode, our journey unfolds entirely in Italy, presenting a challenging 10.5 km ascent and descent at high altitude. The stunning landscapes, majestic peaks, and awe-inspiring viewpoints along the way are sure to captivate. This segment, from the Gianetti Refuge to the Allievi Refuge, forms a segment of the renowned Roma trail, a 54 km path meandering from Val Codera to Valmalenco.

We depart from the Allievi hut in Italy today, heading back to Switzerland. The journey encompasses an 11.2 km stage with a challenging ascent of 1,387 m. This leg introduces us to the first glacier of the trek, the Castel Nord glacier. Our route includes reaching the summit of Castello, the highest peak in Bergell at 3,379m, followed by a descent towards the Albigna hut.

From Albigna to Forno hut, we ascend "Casnilett" peak (Piz Casnil, 3187m), cross "Casnile Sud" pass, descend through Forno glacier moraine, and climb steeply to the hut. Hosted by a young couple and their daughter, they share insights on the glacier's inevitable transformation.

Following the cozy Forno hut, this stage concludes with a high-altitude bivouac at Tremoggia Pass (3000m). Spanning 14.1 km, we traverse the border once more, descending from Sella del Forno into Val Bona in Italy, surrounded by a captivating and colorful landscape.

Departing from the breezy bivouac, our journey involves ascending the Tremoggia glacier and descending the Roseg glacier to reach the Coaz hut. This technically challenging route traverses rock and ice, unveiling a difficult, fascinating, and less-traveled path.

A fairytale landscape unfolds during this 8.4 km stage as we leisurely traverse Val Roseg. The majestic peaks of Pizzo Bernina, Piz Roseg, and the Biancograt ridge provide a stunning backdrop. The breathtaking route leads to the Tschierva hut, where surprises await.

Embarking into the core of the Bernina, one of the loftiest massifs in the Alps, we cover 9.3 km through a landscape of rock and glaciers, ascending to 3750 meters, reaching Piz Morteratsch. The journey includes a spectacular and unexpected vertical descent, leading us to the Boval hut at the base of the Morteratsch glacier.

The conditions of the ice and walls of the Cambrena are particularly critical. Unfortunately, only a part of the group will be able to reach the summit at 3898m... A departure at 3 in the morning to cross the glacier moraine in the night and be ready at dawn to climb the Fortress and reach the summit of Palü as quickly as possible...

From the summit of Palü, we descend towards the Bernina Hospice, passing through Diavolezza. The magnificent scenery of the Bernina massif and its glaciers takes center stage, weaving a tale between fables and stories.

This final stage of the trek takes us from the Bernina Hospice to Poschiavo: we will be immersed in beauty all around. Guiding us will be our four locals from Poschiavo, leading us on a path off the beaten track, along a magnificent ridge.
