A Parisian draper, Mr. Guillaume has two daughters. Virginie, the older one, is gentle and patient. Augustine, the younger, is so charming that they are a few to fall in love with her: Joseph, Mr. Guillaume's clerk, and Theodore de Sommervieux, a young aristocrat who is in love with art. Augustine's heart and hand will go to Theodore while Joseph will marry Virginie.
