At the end of WWII millions of German civilians fled the encroaching Soviet Army. The situation at ports was chaotic; ships were loaded way over capacity. And off the coast, Soviet submarines were lying in wait. In the end, 20,000 people died in three sunken refugee ships. It was one of the worst civilian maritime fatalities of all time. It is a tale of incredible suffering and of heroes.
