With backing from Lady Cora Peters, Eleanor strikes out on her own, opening the charitable Thrift Infirmary in one of London's poorest neighborhoods.

When Lady Cora's pregnant laundry maid is rushed to the Thrift with labor pains, nobody realizes that she will lead them into the criminal underworld.

Eleanor is flattered by the attentions of Dr. Samuel Hunter, who is first to pledge financial support for the struggling Thrift at a party organized by Lady Cora Peters.

Dr. Robert Bramwell's experiments with the "new science" of electro-therapy lands him in hot water.

Eleanor is furious when Lady Peters arranges a meeting between the Thrift and Sir Herbt Hamilton and the governors of the East London Hospital.

Dr. Robert Bramwell plays matchmaker between Eleanor and an old friend, Major Hyde.
