Édouard Manet is a major French painter of the late nineteenth century. Initiator of modern painting, Manet is wrongly considered today as one of the fathers of Impressionism. He differs from the Impressionists by his paintings concerned with reality, he makes little use of the new techniques of color, and the particular treatment of light then in vogue.
