Helen, the British wife of a successful German businessman, takes a daring course of action after her husband's arrest for drug trafficking in Hamburg. Meanwhile, on a fact-finding mission to Pakistan, British official Jack Lithgow has an eye-opening encounter with Fazal, a local poppy farmer.

In Britain, Jack deals with a family crisis when his daughter Caroline gest busted for drugs. In Germany, Helen attempts to collect from her husband's dealers, with disastrous results. And in Karachi, out-of-work Fazal falls into the orbit of Tariq Butt, a powerful Pakistani drug lord.

Increasingly desperate after the kidnapping of her son, Helen turns back to smuggling, despite constant police surveillance. While Jack's marriage disintegrates in Britain, Fazal's new job as Tariq's chauffeur puts him in a perfect position to witness his boss exercise power.

Already under heavy pressure from the Home Office, Jack faces a new, more serious crisis with Caroline. At a remote heroin lab in Pakistan, Tariq confronts a recalcitrant chemist and tests Fazal's loyalty. Helen boldly attempts to influence the outcome of her husband's trial.

In Pakistan to sign the aid agreement, Jack insists on the arrests of specific traffickers. Ultimately, his demands have devastating consequences for Fazal. Helen ventures a deal with Tariq, but she must first win his trust.

Jack returns to Britain utterly changed, his career and family in ruins. As police prepare to close in on Helen, Fazal's wife agrees to smuggle heroin for Tariq to secure her husband's freedom.
