In the series premiere, the Ingalls settle in Walnut Grove, and patriarch Charles (Michael Landon) must take on several jobs at once to make their new life work. But everything is on the line after an accident occurs.

Laura and Mary attend school outside of their own home for the first time. On their first day, they meet Nellie Oleson, who refers to them as "country girls". Laura becomes very dedicated to her schoolwork.

A brutal hailstorm ruins the Ingalls crops and Charles travels with neighboring farmers to look for work. While Charles is away, Caroline leads the women of Walnut Grove in joining together to harvest the remaining crops.

While Charles is visiting Mankato, he runs into the mountain man the Ingalls befriended, Mr. Edwards, and invites him to return with him to Walnut Grove. Back in Walnut Grove, Caroline sets up Mr. Edwards with a widow, Grace Snider.

Laura falls in love with a new student, Johnny Johnson. Johnny, who is much older than Laura, has eyes for Mary instead. Although Mary is not romantically interested, Laura's strong feelings cause tension between the sisters.

Miss Amy realizes she has not seen her children or grandchildren in ages. Convinced that her family would only travel to Walnut Grove for her funeral, she enlists the help of the Ingalls and Doc Baker to help her stage her own death.

Laura befriends a schoolmate, Olga, who is bullied by the other children because one of her legs is shorter than the other. Pa has a plan to help her friend and builds her an elevated shoe…but surprisingly Olga's father becomes upset by his efforts.

Charles and Caroline decide to go on a second honeymoon. Mr. Edwards babysits the children and soon discovers caring for three girls is no easy task. Caroline finds herself constantly worrying about the well-being of her daughters.

Caroline substitutes for Ms. Beadle at the school and takes a special interest in helping an older student, Abel, learn to read. To Caroline's dismay, Mrs. Oleson shows up, interferes with class, and causes Abel to quit school.

After Laura (Melissa Gilbert) breaks a beloved doll while playing catch with Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson), Mary brings her a baby raccoon to cheer her up. When the raccoon gets spooked and bites Laura and her dog, the family fears of rabies.

The town becomes divided when Mrs. Oleson offers to finance a bell for the church...on the condition that a plaque is put up with her name on it. As the arguing intensifies, Tinker Jones, a deaf-mute craftsman, takes matters into his own hands.

Caroline forbids Mary from taking an extra credit exam after she accidentally starts a fire in the barn while studying. Mary tries to win back her mother's good graces but delays telling her teacher the bad news.

Caroline gives birth to a baby boy and Laura refuses to pray for his good health out of the common feeling that the baby will be the sole object of her parents' affections. Laura grapples with guilt and remorse when the infant passes away.

The Christmas holiday is approaching, and the members of the Ingalls family go about their holiday shopping in secrecy. Laura selflessly strives to come up with the money to buy gifts for her loved ones.

After a major disagreement, Nels and Harriet Oleson go their separate ways. The Ingalls, along with more townspeople, get involved to reunite the couple.

Doc Baker falls in love with Harriet Oleson's lovely and compassionate niece, Kate, but their age difference proves to be an obstacle in their relationship.

A typhus outbreak strikes Walnut Grove, and it is soon apparent that the sufferers are all displaying the same symptoms. The church doubles as a makeshift hospital, where Charles, Doc Baker and Rev. Alden are quarantined with the sick.

A friendly, traveling circus man, Willie O'Hara, comes to Walnut Grove and many of the townspeople begin to believe that he has magic healing powders. Doc Baker grows concerned with Mr. O'Hara's "mumbo jumbo" and plots to intervene.

The Ingalls take in a young boy after Miss Beadle discovers he is being beaten by his alcoholic father. Charles stays with the father to help him get sober.

A college-educated farmer named Joe moves to Walnut Grove. He tells the Walnut Grove-area farmers of a new hybrid of corn, which excites them. They decide to buy some of this new seed. While on the way back to Walnut Grove, Joe gets into an accident

While returning from a family trip, the Ingalls have to seek shelter when a blizzard hits. Sheltering inside an abandoned cabin, the family meets a Native American fugitive in hiding. Michael Landon and Karen Grassle star.

After having an argument with his father, Johnny Johnson leaves to "see the world" and Mr. Edwards protectively accompanies him. Mr. Edwards plans to convince Johnny to return home.

Excitement is in the air as Walnut Grove celebrates Founder's Day. Charles is challenged to a log chopping contest by an older logger once known as "Bull of the Woods".
