Frankie rushes back from a big media awards dinner when Julia, who is married to her ex, Charlie, goes into labor. She tries to reconnect with her date for the evening.

Frankie looks for solace with a work colleague, her mother seeks out male company of her own, and Charlie brother, Tom, is rocked by a death at the local rehab center.

Charlie and Julia get a house guest - Howard, a former boyfriend of Julias, who is visiting from Hong Kong. Young Lou gets caught in a tug-of-war between her parents.

Off his meds, Tom is spiraling downward and refuses to get help, Frankie hits the bottle, and Julia and Charlie struggle with the work-and-home life balance.

Howard calls Frankie for a date. Julia is caught shoplifting on her birthday and gets an unusual present. For Julia, things fail to improve at a dinner out with Charlie.

Frankie and Howards relationship starts to deepen even as Charlie and Julia are heading for the rocks. Meanwhile, Tom may finally have met someone.

Charlie tries to patch things up with Julia. Frankie has to come to a decision about Howard. Frankies mother finds complications in her own love life.

A tragedy in the park puts all other matters in perspective, and the family comes together to plan a funeral. Tom makes Frankie an unusual promise.

Frankie and Charlie try to deal with their grief in different ways - and eventually turn to the only other person who understands what they are going through.

Frankie is shortlisted for the Blake Prize for Religious Art, makes it through to a significant birthday, and gets news that will pit Charlie and Tom against each other.
