London, 1988. When her husband dies an untimely death, wealthy housewife Simone Burbeck (aka Sammy Cooper) and her kids are forced to return to Sammy's no-frills childhood home in Newcastle, Australia.

As Sammy and her kids get a reality check, her brother Jim, old schoolmate (and new employer) Chris and ex-boyfriend Dan let their decades-old resentments rip. Meanwhile, her mother Jean opens herself up to love.

Sammy and Fiona look to blackmail Chris. Misfits Lenny and Bo bond over their obsession with Abby. Jim finds himself embracing his role as uncle, while Jean and Peter have an unconventional first date.

Chris brings Sammy on a business trip to Sydney, where she helps him impress some big-shot investors. Back in Newcastle, Jim finds himself heartbroken, while Abby takes advantage of her new friendship with Tess.

Sammy sets out to prove how much she's changed by volunteering at the school dance, where she and Dan finally bury the hatchet. Jim devises a scheme to win Bev back. Jean and Peter's night away takes an unfortunate turn.

Jean takes a hard look at her relationships with Peter and her children. Sammy and Jim invite Bev to meddle with Sammy's UK estate, while an emboldened Sammy settles scores across town. Tess and Lenny risk it all for Abby.
