Aviator Captain Salih Ekrem Yüzbaşı is a young officer and one of the first Ottoman pilots. He lost his wife at the birth of their daughter Gülmelek. When the English attack the Ottoman Empire with their fleet in February 1915, he leaves Gülmelek with his mother. He leaves Istanbul and takes his plane, 'one of the first planes', to Çanakkale, at the mouth of the Dardanelles.
