Paquita la del Barrio (Mexico)

Paquita celebrates 45 years of career. Her memories take her to 1957, in Alto Lucero, Veracruz. She dreams she’s singing with Camilo, her love. Sonia’s wedding is coming, and Viola and Chica go to Clara’s house to bake the cake. Camilo looks for Chica and confesses his love for Viola. Griselda accuses Chica of stealing. Chica leaves her house and takes refuge at father Fertxu’s.

Antonio blames himself on the theft. Father Fertxu gets Griselda to pay for the cake. Chica confesses teacher Lupita she’s lovesick, and she gifts her a diary. Viola tells Clara what happened with Chica. Chica sees boat tickets and believes Antonio wants to take her to one, and gets disappointed when he doesn’t. Antonio goes to Sonia’s wedding, Griselda almost faints when she sees his hat.

Chica gets her heart broken again when she realizes Camilo’s in love with Clara. There’s a commotion about the open call for the talent show. Teacher Lupita hears Chica sing in the bathroom, and encourages her to sign up for the show. Clara decides to “offer herself” to Antonio, and gets hurt when he rejects her. Manuel steals Chica’s diary, shows everyone and makes Chica furious.

Clara helps Jesús to confirm his suspicion on his wife’s infidelity. Antonio wins a cockfight and Chica wins the talent show. Jesús kills Antonio at point blank in front of everyone. Then, the son of late Antonio appears, and Griselda treats him as his late son. Chica uses the money of the show for her uncle’s funeral, after the breeder lies about Antonio.

Chica tries to trade her bicycle for a tortilla machine. Griselda doesn’t accept, and Camilo convinces her. Clara tries to commit suicide; Camilo saves her and keeps her secret that she sent an anonymous to Jesús. Five years later, at Antonio’s anniversary mass, Chica sings with all the love she had for her uncle. Mr. Honorio invites Chica to sing at his tavern. Aurora hires an investigator.

Clara tries to seduce Camilo. Lalo sees Chica singing and mocks her, until Gerardo stops him by hitting him. Chica tells Viola what happened at the tavern. Engracia scolds Lucía, who tells her she’ll dress however she wants. Chica shivers when she sees her new boss is Gerardo, the mysterious man who picks her as his assistant. Father Fertxu gets a serenade to raise funds.

Chica, in love, wears make up to look prettier at work. Engracia pressures father Fertxu to invite Gerardo for dinner, with the intention of getting him to marry Lucía. The girls’ chorus doesn’t raise the money for the trip. Griselda fights with Camilo, who decides to leave their house. Gerardo leaves Chica an affectionate note, and she confesses Lucía she’s in love with Gerardo.

Lucía is worried about Chica’s revelation. Lucía, along with other women, initiates a campaign to promote respect for women. Gerardo and Chica get to El Reparo, but the fair was the previous week, and they end up kissing. Chica doesn’t make it to her audition, and Viola gets the solo. Chica and Clara fight, Camilo intervenes and Chica tells him that Clara is unfaithful, and everyone in town knows.

Aurora shows Simón Horacio’s letter, who thinks he’s been discovered, but asks for more money. Chica, sad because she was left alone, asks her Pedrito for a sign. Gerardo arrives and comforts her, takes her to a radio booth, where Chica meets one of her favorite artists. Rubén finds Simón spending the money Aurora gave him. Viola discovers Chica and Gerardo’s romance.

Clara tells Griselda Chica’s secret. Aurora finally listens to Toñito, and realizes Horacio’s letter was false, demands an apology from Engracia and accepts the job at Rubén’s shop. Chica lies and says her boyfriend is Manuel. Engracia takes her with him without letting her know. Chica has to kiss him, and Manuel, surprised, kisses her back. Lucía and León plan to open a dance academy.

Lucía and Engracia look for Hernando, but León finds him at Antonio’s grave. Manuel fakes being Chica’s boyfriend and buys her flowers. Gerardo gets jealous and fights with Chica. Camilo and Clara see Manuel declaring his love for Chica, who rejects him. Manuel gets drunk and insults Chica. Aurora is a good salesperson. Chica holds her ground and accepts that she and Gerardo love each other.

Engracia, still mad with Chica, looks for Horacio so he can put the family in order. Gerardo apologizes to Chica, and they go on a romantic picnic, and when they return, they see Manuel. Viola sings and surprises the public, including an agent from the capital. Engracia looks for Rosa to get Horacio’s location. Engracia sees Lucía with León. Camilo tells Manuel off for how he treats Chica.

Gerardo takes Chica for a walk in front of everyone. Lucía looks for León to fix things, and they end up making love. Engracia pays Rosa a good amount of money for Horacio to come back. Gerardo teaches Chica to drive, and they kiss. Viola meets with Chica, who calls her a traitor. Lucía and León decide to live together. Chica asks Lucía to give Gerardo a letter. Rubén is surprised to see Horacio.

León gets a great job offer and tells Lucía they’ll move to Cuba. Camilo discovers Clara started the rumor about Chica and Gerardo’s romance, and tells her it’s her fault Antonio died, and ends his relationship with her. Camilo apologizes to Chica for letting Clara manipulate him. Clara fails in seducing Gerardo. Manuel invites Clara for a drink, and they end up making love.

Viola and Camilo help Chica meet Gerardo, and they finally make love. Aurora looks for Rubén to thank him for paying the debt, and he proposes she leaves her husband and runs away with him, but she refuses. Engracia kicks Chica out of her house. Lucía, in solidarity, also leaves. Clara and Manuel are almost caught by Camilo, who confesses his feelings to Chica, but Gerardo interrupts them.

Viola calls Guzmán to remind him she wants to sing. Chica tells Lucía she’ll move in with Gerardo. Horacio, jealous, breaks all of Rubén’s shop windows, and makes Aurora quit. A few months go by, and Chica is sad she’s not singing and misses her family; Gerardo is against her being a singer. Chica takes advantage of Gerardo's trip, and goes to the audition with Viola, and they sing together.

Camilo can’t forget Clara. Gerardo returns earlier, and Chica, scared to see him angry, tells him she only accompanied Viola to the audition. Gerardo learns the truth. Aurora looks for Rubén. Chica makes up with her aunt Lucía. Clara gets one of the executives to listen to her sing, and asks her mother for a spell to have a good audition. Rosa realizes they’re taking advantage of her.

Chica and Viola get offered a job singing at a restaurant. They go, but Chica faints, and receives the best news ever: she’s pregnant. Gerardo gets advantage of this and keeps her away from the stage. Eight months go by, and Chica is planning her wedding. Aurora sees Rubén dating Lupita, and her heart breaks. Rosa dies, and Camilo is free from the spell. Clara mourns her mother’s death.

Lucía fixes a dress for Chica's wedding. Horacio learns about the wedding and forbids everyone to assist. Viola confronts him, and assists with Antoñito and Hernando. When they go on their honeymoon, Chica goes into labor. The baby is born, and as time goes by, Gerardo spends little time with Chica and the baby. José goes to Chiapas. Lucía visits Chica and asks about her relationship with Gerardo.

Lucía and Viola try to make Chica see Gerardo’s not a good husband, but she defends him. Camila helps José to recover his lands, and goes to study in the capital. Viola saves money to do the same. Four years go by, and the situation is the same, but now Chica has a second child. Engracia’s health worsens. Viola quits her job as a singer and thinks of Chica as her replacement.

Viola offers Chica a job, she accepts, but in the kitchen. Clara replaces her and fails. Chica sings with Viola, but she doesn’t want to sing anymore, so she asks Joel to give Clara another chance, as she hears them. Viola is ready to leave for the capital, but her savings are gone. Gerardo learns from Clara that Chica sang at the restaurant. Joaquina, Gerardo’s other wife appears.

Aurora feels free, but gets sad when she learns Rubén and Lupita are engaged. Lucía gathers that Gerardo has a lover, and urges to tell her niece. Chica can’t believe Gerardo has another home, but after investigating, she’s sure Gerardo has a lover and she’ll prove it. Clara uses a fake pregnancy to trap Camilo and go to the capital with him.

Chica and Viola go to Gerardo’s second home, and Joaquina yells and insults them. Gerardo doesn’t defend Chica, he attacks her. Camilo confesses Clara is pregnant, and father Fertxu encourages him to be a good father. Aurora asks Camilo advice to get a divorce. Camilo proposes to Clara and tells Griselda, who knows Clara is faking it. Joaquina and Chica fight again, and Engracia sees the argument.

Father Fertxu stops Joaquina and Chica’s fight, and then, in private, convinces Chica to go to the capital with Viola. Chica tells Camilo she’s going to México, and he tells her about Clara’s pregnancy. Aurora threatens Gerardo. Camila tricks her mother and Camilo into thinking she lost the baby. When Chica and Viola leave, they realize Clara is coming with them.
