A woman is found brutally murdered, her naked body dumped in an overflowing bath. The woman's wedding ring is missing. Torn off. The same M.O. as another recent murder. But this time there's a cry for help, scrawled in blood - "Help me Jane"

Jane Halifax is summoned to investigate a murder within the High Security Unit of a prison - a jail within a jail. Five suspects, all psychopaths, all have murdered before, none of them known for their ability to work as a team. An impenetrable wall of silence confronts Jane; her task is to find out what conspiracy binds them together.

When a bus full of local teenagers collides with a station wagon and runs off the road, the tight-knit Christian community in which Jane Halifax's mother (Robyn Nevin) now lives, goes into shock.
