The Royle Family

Jim Royle has just been given a haircut by Barbara and Denise and David Best visit with Baby David. The boys go and eat their tea in the kitchen and end up doing some Ali-G impressions. Dave changes the baby's nappy and Barbara admires him. It's time for Dave and Denise to go and watch the match at home. They almost forget the baby.

It's Saturday morning and Baby David has spent the night with Grandparents Jim and Barbara Royle, while Dave and Denise have been out for the night for their anniversary. Denise and Dave come round with hangovers. Antony is sent upstairs to see to Baby David who's been crying. While he's up there the rest of the family sneak out for a hair of the dog at the Feathers.

Jim and Twiggy are stripping the wallpaper in the front room for Baby David's Christening. Barbara returns from doing the shopping. Dave comes over with the baby, and ends up helping with the stripping too, while Denise has popped next door to look at Cheryl's new scales. Denise and Cheryl the visit and sit with Barb in the kitchen. Barbara makes everyone bacon sandwiches.

Nana and Barbara are dressed in black. Elsie has passed away and they've just returned from the funeral. Nana is very upset. Jim has no sympathy for her. Cheryl and Denise return from shopping in the precinct. Antony returns from Emma's. Barbara isn't making any tea they decide to send Antony to the fish and chip shop instead.

Antony is peeling potatoes to make some chips and tells the family about his business trip to London to try and get a record deal. Antony juggles the potatoes which prompts Dave to show everybody his finger trick. Nana and Jim fight over going to the loo.

It's Baby David's christening party. The Royle Family return from the pub doing the congo through the back kitchen door. They are joined by the Carrolls from next door, Twiggy and his girlfriend Michelle, Darren, Emma (Antony's girlfriend) and PJ Gaunt. They all have a good time culminating in a sing along to New York, New York, the end of which is interrupted by Barbara.

The Royles are celebrating Christmas. Bloated with turkey, the family focuses their attention on baby David. It's his first birthday, and his presents include a box of 200 cigarettes. Meanwhile Antony is about to marry into a wealthy family, and Barbara is wondering what to feed to her future in-laws, the wealthy, but vegetarian Kavanaghs.

Life goes on in the familiar surroundings of their sitting room, but six years on baby David has grown up - but has the rest of the family? As tension mounts in the Royle household, the family questions the implications of their home being fully laminated throughout and Cheryl places an ad in a lonely hearts column of a local newspaper and finds that, unfortunately, love isn't blind after all.

After a two-year absence, the Royles return in a festive special and for the first time, Denise is cooking Christmas dinner. This means, of course, that everything is likely to go wrong. But in true Royle family fashion, they rally round and make the best of what they have. Because who needs Christmas when you've got each other... and a new sofa?
