Charles and Caroline Ingalls sell their family house and farm in Walnut Grove to the Carters in order to find a more promising life in Iowa. After a new teacher is named, Laura prepares her home for Almanzo's brother and his daughter, Jenny.

Almanzo's brother Royal, who has moved to Walnut Grove with his daughter Jenny, is dying and asks Laura and Almanzo to take care of his daughter when he's gone. And their first test comes when Jenny is devastated by her father's death.

Harriet Oleson finds a bearer bond and uses it to try to get people to bend to her will. She tells the town council that if the town isn't renamed Olesonville, she will cash in the bond, forcing the town to pay Mrs. Oleson a fortune.

Mr. Stark finds out that he and his family are bankrupt and losing their farm. The stress causes him to act irrationally, shooting his wife and daughter. The two women recover while several of the men in Walnut Grove begin looking for Mr. Stark.

A small-stature circus performer, Lou, decides to look for work in Walnut Grove after his wife dies while giving birth. A prejudiced Mrs. Oleson (Katherine MacGregor) uses all of her power to make sure that the little person doesn't find work.

A traveling side-show comes to Walnut Grove, and the main attraction is a "wild" boy. When he escapes and becomes friends with the Wilders, they discover his name Matthew Rogers and he acts wild only because he is given morphine. (Part 1 of 2)

Isaiah Edwards keeps Matthew at his place until a judge comes and rules that Matthew be placed in an institution. Mr. Edwards pleads that everyone is crazy sometimes and tries to convince the judge to allow the boy to stay with him. (Part 2 of 2)

Nellie returns to town and discovers that her adopted sister's behavior has grown worse. Nellie tries to connect with Nancy, and just when the rest of the Olesons think the young girl has learned a valuable lesson, she proves the opposite.

Everyone is excited to learn the railroad is coming to town, but they soon learn there is a catch. The townspeople of Walnut Grove must band together to fight the mighty railroad company that wants to take land from some of the local farmers.

Laura's childhood friend comes back to Walnut Grove. Blind since birth, she soon falls in love with Mr. Edwards, a man old enough to be her father. When she undergoes an operation that may allow her to see, she may truly meet the man she loves.

A reverend passing through town arouses the suspicions of Reverend Alden who fears he will lose his congregation to the handsome reverend. Adding to concerns, Mr. Edwards notices that this reverend spends a lot of time with Mrs. Carter and Laura.

Jenny loses a necklace in a pond and almost drowns trying to get it. After the incident, she has partial brain damage and must retrain herself to talk and walk. Jenny's friend, a retired doctor, helps Jenny to force herself to get better.

When Sarah's mother dies, her father comes to Walnut Grove and tries to convince her to come back to New York so that her family can have a better life. But what her father can't understand is that her better life is in Walnut Grove.

The notorious Younger Brothers have just been released from prison after a very long time and they show up in Walnut Grove to continue their life of crime. But the Younger Brothers never were the best of criminals…and time hasn't changed that much.

When her book wins a contest, Laura travels to Minneapolis and is offered a publishing contract…but when the publisher demands edits that substantially change Laura's original intent, she finds herself torn between her dream and her principals.
