Surgeons: At the Edge of Life

Thirty-three-year-old Ben is rushed to hospital after crashing his motorcycle into a fixed metal gate. By the time he arrives in the emergency department's resus bay he is in a critical condition and has already been administered ketamine to help alleviate his significant pain.

Ruth, a 63-year-old retired Addenbrooke's intensive care nurse. Just one month ago, Ruth started fainting and found she was struggling to form sentences. At first, she thought it might be a stroke. But after seeking medical help, tests revealed she had a glioblastoma - an aggressive cancerous tumour - growing near the area of her brain responsible for movement and speech.

42-year-old Tracey has been living with one kidney since her right kidney failed when she was in her twenties due to sustained high blood pressure. A year ago, she was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure in her remaining kidney, so she had to go onto daily dialysis or she would die. The best long-term solution for her is a kidney transplant.

Riki Trivedi is one of the hospital's leading neurosurgeons, and one of only a handful of consultants in the UK who operate on patients with Neurofibromatosis; an incurable genetic disorder that causes tumours to grow from nerves around the body.

Orthopaedic Spinal surgeon John Crawford who is among a select group in the UK who specialises in surgery to correct scoliosis - a curvature of the spine. The procedure is so complex and demanding that John operates with another surgical colleague, Orthopaedic Consultant Doug Hay.
