Call Your Mother

After not hearing from Freddie for four days, Jean leaves her home in Iowa to check on him in Los Angeles. Once there, Jean realizes both Freddie and Jackie need her in more (and different) ways than she thought.

Jean, eager to start her new California life, is surprised to find her kids have less time to spend with her than she hoped. On top of that, she learns Danny's ex-wife is less "ex" than he implied. With no other options, Jean is forced to venture out and start building a life of her own in Los Angeles.

An earthquake brings out the information that Jean broke quarantine to visit Freddie, but not Jackie. Now Jean is on a mission to convince Jackie that she doesn't love Freddie more. Meanwhile, Celia is annoyed that Freddie always turns to his mother for advice over her. And while repairing Jean's guesthouse after earthquake damage, Danny learns that Cheryl's handyman is her new boyfriend.

 Jean tries to "have it all" when she starts her new job, buys a new car, and does her best to tend to all of her children's needs when they suddenly have a couple of days to spend all their time with her. It turns out Danny is right when he gently points out it might be time to redefine their relationships in adult terms and introduce something called "boundaries" or risk "losing it all".

When confronted by each other about their respective dating fears, both Jean and Lane set out to make changes; Lane pursues a co-worker and Jean takes a chance on a neighbor she meets by her trash cans. Freddie is afraid his conservative dating history won't hold Celia's interest and attempts to make himself more colorful. With pants.

Celia is convinced Jean doesn't like her and is determined to prove it to Freddie at Jean's weekly Sunday dinners. Meanwhile, Jean asks Jackie to bring her much older boyfriend to dinner and promises to be on her best behavior when she meets him. Danny skips Sunday dinner to do a thing with Cheryl, which bothers Jean more than she thought it would.

As Jackie (Rachel Sennott) looks to reset her life after quitting her job and breaking up with her boss, concerns about Celia's (Emma Caymares) commitment issues prompt Freddie (Joey Bragg) to seek his mom's advice. 

When Sharon surprises Jean on her birthday, Jean is excited to show Sharon her new life in Los Angeles, but both women are confronted with the harsh reality that long distance friending has changed the dynamic of their relationship. Meanwhile, Freddie and Jackie compete over who's getting Jean the better birthday present, Celia stresses over the b-day dinner, Lane composes a b-day song, and Da...

When Lane's judgmental mom, Barbara (played by Kym Whitley), comes to town, Lane tries to temporarily rid his apartment and life of anything that she may disapprove of, including Jean and Jackie. Meanwhile, Freddie attempts to hide his professional success to make Jackie feel better about her current difficulties, and Sharon inappropriately gets cozy with Danny while sleepwalking.

Before Sharon leaves town, she and Jean decide to plan a trip to Vegas; Celia and Freddie have a serious conversation about whether or not they want kids.

After Danny's divorce is finalized, he asks Jean to go out on an official first date with him, but things go awry on the date once Jean realizes it's the same day as another special day in her life. Meanwhile, Freddie and Jackie fight over who should get to keep Jean's old engagement ring.

Jean fears her family is drifting apart so she brings everyone together for a game night that doesn't go as planned.

Jean and Danny embark on a trip to Iowa together with hopes of taking their relationship to the next level, but ghosts from Jean's past life make it difficult for them to move forward. After becoming addicted to true-crime television, Jackie, Freddie and Lane realize they don't know much about Danny and fear that he could be a murderer.
