Rory and Lorelai arrange a dinner with an alumnus to get advice about Rory's Harvard application. Meanwhile, Lane becomes enamored with a potential new member of her rock band.

The PTA invites Lorelai and Luke to speak at the high school's career day, but it turns ugly. Lane asserts independence from her mother by dying her hair purple--with Rory's help.

Lorelai pursues an attractive man whom she met at an auction organized by Emily. Meanwhile, Rory enlists Jess' help when she can't turn off a neighbor's sprinkler system.

When Rory is invited to a celebration for her father's pregnant girlfriend, Lorelai is forced to attend as well. Meanwhile, Luke discovers that Jess has a surprising second job.

Determined to win the annual 24-hour dance marathon, Lorelai forces Rory to be her partner. While everyone in town dances around them, Rory and Jess can't stop arguing.

Lorelai and Rory join Richard and Emily on a trip to visit Yale University, but Richard causes trouble. Meanwhile, Luke tells Jess how he feels about Jess' relationship with Rory.

On the way to a formal dinner party with Richard and Emily for Thanksgiving, Lorelai and Rory stop for celebrations with Lane, Sookie and Luke. Lorelai learns Rory applied to Yale.

Lorelai is forced to miss the winter carnival when Richard's haughty mother insists on having dinner with Richard and Emily at the inn and makes a surprise announcement.

Rory's manipulative classmate Francie convinces Paris that Rory has been plotting against her. Meanwhile, Lorelai meets an interesting man, Alex Lesman, at a business seminar.

After agreeing to go on a fishing date with Alex, Lorelai asks Luke for a lesson on fishing techniques. Meanwhile, the political battle between Rory and Paris escalates.

When Christopher's pregnant girlfriend, Sherry (MÄDCHEN AMICK), begins labor and asks Rory to stay with her at the hospital, Lorelai reminisces about the day Rory was born.

Lorelai goes away with her new boyfriend, Alex, for a weekend in New York, but she worries about leaving Rory and Jess together. Meanwhile, Rory accuses Jess of fighting with Dean.

Rory accompanies Lane to a hockey game, where she encounters Dean and his new girlfriend, Lindsay. Meanwhile, Lorelai confronts Jess about his poor treatment of Rory.

While waiting for their college acceptance letters, Rory and Paris compete to give a speech. Meanwhile, Lorelai wonders if ending her engagement to Max was the right decision.

When a fire at the inn forces Lorelai to lodge guests in her own house, she spends the night at Luke's place. Meanwhile, Rory tries to decide amongst Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

While Lorelai deals with rebuilding the inn, Rory schemes to give her mom a great birthday party. Meanwhile, Luke confirms his suspicions about Jess skipping school are correct.

Lane's rock band debut ends badly when the animosity between Jess and Dean results in a fistfight. Meanwhile, Lorelai serves on a committee and is uncomfortably reunited with Max.

After the brawl between Jess and Dean, Lane is in trouble and Luke is furious at Jess. But ironically, Lorelai is proud of Rory. Later, Jess ponders a major decision.

Jess travels to Venice, California where his father, Jimmy, lives. The reunion causes tension with Jimmy's girlfriend. Also, Lorelai agonizes over paying for Rory's Yale education.

In the season finale, Rory and Lorelai happily prepare for Rory's graduation from Chilton. But major developments involving the Independence Inn threaten to dampen the festivities.
