Goodnight Sweetheart

With the Royal Oak having been razed, Gary anxiously awaits the completion of the new buildings so that he can travel back to 1941. When he finally returns, he tries to use his knowledge of the future to affect the progress of the war.

With New Year’s Eve approaching, Gary makes plans to celebrate with Phoebe in the past and attend a party with Yvonne in the present. Meanwhile, Ron and his wife are experiencing marital troubles.

Yvonne is invited to interview for a job with an electronics company, but the company’s owner wants to meet Gary as well. Back at the Royal Oak, Phoebe broaches the topic of having children, and Gary pries into Reg’s past.

Reg is under orders to find the person who has been circulating counterfeit currency, and Gary fits the suspect’s profile. Gary takes Ron to task for giving him bad forgeries, but Ron insists that his are good and suggests that a German spy might be operating in the area.

Gary thinks his life is going pretty well: business at his shop is good, and both Yvonne and Phoebe seem happy. Ron, meanwhile, is miserable, and Gary gives him some advice that might not be the wisest course of action.

When Stella throws Ron out, the Sparrows take him in, but Ron has trouble keeping Gary’s secret from Yvonne. Back in 1942, Phoebe’s orphaned cousins are staying with her now that the Blitz is over, and Gary tries to give the children music lessons.

When Gary plays a Beatles song at a birthday party at the Royal Oak, he draws the attention of a music promoter, who is keen to give the song to entertainer George Formby. Fearing that he will interfere with history, Gary tries everything in his power to prevent this.

Phoebe’s husband, Donald, returns from the front, having escaped from his Italian captors, but their reunion does not go well. Gary resolves to part with Phoebe, but first he has a heart-to-heart with Donald.

Phoebe has come down with pneumonia, and Gary raids his medicine cabinet to try to find penicillin for her, which is still an experimental drug in 1942. Meanwhile, Yvonne is spending a suspicious amount of time with her personal trainer.

American GIs have arrived in Britain, and Gary is perturbed by their presence at the Royal Oak. Ron asks Gary to get him parts for a WWII jeep from one of the servicemen, and Phoebe gets into a standoff with a racist Southerner.

Gary’s double life gets him into double trouble when both Yvonne and Phoebe get pregnant by him and want to move to the suburbs.
