After newlywed couple Doug and Lexy Monroe die in a plane crash, they wake up in a hotel room where an angel, Mr. Shepherd, explains that there was a mix-up: the Monroes must return to Earth and help people if they want to earn their place in heaven. The Monroes' first assignment is to keep Lexy's parents from separating.

Mr. Shepherd sends Doug and Lexy to the aid of a beautiful aerobics instructor named Lindsey who has inadvertently found herself involved in a love triangle at her new apartment building. It seems that one of her neighbors has developed more than just a crush on Lindsey which makes his wife very jealous.

Doug and Lexy's eight week wedding anniversary celebration is interrupted when Mr. Shepherd sends them on a job related to their own deaths. Beth Donahue, the mechanic who inspected their plane, is being blamed for the crash and may lose her license or worse. Doug and Lexy must clear her name without revealing themselves to anyone who might recognize them.

Mr. Shepherd presents Doug and Lexy with an unusual problem--saving the future life of a child not yet conceived. They must use their talents to preserve the marriage of Jeff and Sarah Barnett as they struggle with infertility.

"Natalie's Corner," a tabloid talk show starring the beautiful and aggressive Natalie Lanier, has come to San Antonio to tape some episodes. When Doug and Lexy go watch a taping, Doug unexpectedly becomes a hero when he dives into the river to save a man who has fallen in. With the cameras rolling, Doug disappears to avoid revealing himself, but his disappearance was caught on tape.

A woman in her 30s is found suffering from amnesia in a parking garage after being badly beaten. She's carrying a business card for marriage counseling with Doug and Lexy's names on it. A nurse in the ER calls them to ID her but when they don't recognize her, police officer Jeff Paris realizes it's his wife.

Doug and Lexy visit Madelaine Taylor, the famous author of the children's book series "Tillie." Madelaine is suffering from writer's block and is deeply frustrated and lonely despite the company of her niece Louisa, who is visiting for the summer.
